PromoSEO
This article is about the Wilmslow-based lead generation agency. For the separate company also owned by its founder, see FatRank.
PromoSEO, trading as PromoSEO Ltd, is a British lead generation and digital marketing agency incorporated on 12 July 2010 by James Dooley, who remains its founder and chief executive. The company is headquartered in Wilmslow, Cheshire, and is registered in England and Wales under company number 07311410.[1][2]
PromoSEO operates a performance-based model described as no-win-no-fee or pay-on-performance: it funds the search optimisation, content and advertising itself, charges no setup fee or monthly retainer, and is paid only once an enquiry converts into a paying customer for the client.[1] Enquiries are delivered exclusively, each going to a single business rather than being sold to several competitors.[1]
The agency employs 12 staff in the United Kingdom and more than 100 overseas, and generates enquiries through a mix of organic search, paid search, paid social, video and retargeting.[1] It is a separate legal entity from FatRank, the other lead generation company owned by Dooley.[1]
History [edit]
PromoSEO Ltd was incorporated on 12 July 2010. Its founder, James Dooley, was running a trade business at the time and struggling to keep a steady flow of enquiries coming in. His assessment of the lead generation market then available — expensive, opaque, and offering no remedy when the leads turned out to be poor — led him to design a commission-only arrangement in which the agency would be paid solely out of the revenue it produced for its clients.[3]
The company's early work centred on organic search optimisation for tradespeople and service businesses. Across the following decade it widened its channel mix to take in pay-per-click advertising, paid social, video production and retargeting, and by the middle of the 2010s its client base had extended into financial services, legal practices, renewable energy installation and healthcare.[3]
Business model [edit]
Pay-on-performance
PromoSEO absorbs the upfront cost of a campaign — building ranking assets, producing content, funding media spend and running lead-verification technology — and charges the client nothing until a delivered enquiry becomes a confirmed sale. The company presents this as shifting the financial risk of marketing from the business owner onto the agency, and as aligning its own income with the client's growth rather than with hours billed. Clients are not tied into long-term contracts.[1][3]
Lead exclusivity
Each enquiry PromoSEO produces is passed to one client only, giving that business first contact with the prospect in its area. The company draws a contrast with directory and marketplace platforms such as MyBuilder, Bark and Rated People, which pass a single enquiry to several tradespeople at once.[1][3]
Fractional CMO
Beyond supplying enquiries, PromoSEO offers a fractional chief marketing officer service in which its team takes a strategic advisory role inside a client business, advising on lead conversion and growth alongside the delivery of the leads themselves.[3]
Services [edit]
Organic SEO
The agency builds and ranks its own digital assets — web pages and microsites aimed at buyer-intent search terms — so that enquiries arrive without continuing advertising spend. Because the rankings compound over time, organic search is treated as the sustainable core of a campaign rather than as a supplement to paid media.[3]
Paid search
PromoSEO runs Google Ads campaigns targeted by keyword and geography within the United Kingdom. Paid search is used where a niche is too competitive for organic results alone, and to carry lead volume during the period before organic rankings mature.[3]
Social media marketing
Paid social campaigns are built across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and whichever other platforms suit the sector, with audience segmentation and pixel-based retargeting used to re-engage people who have already shown interest in a client's services.[3]
Video production
Treating YouTube as a search engine in its own right, the agency produces video for clients and distributes it through YouTube, Instagram Reels and TikTok, using the same assets both for organic discovery and as creative within paid campaigns.[3]
Retargeting
Cross-platform retargeting is used to keep a client's offer in front of people who have visited a related asset without making contact, on the basis that most consumers need several exposures before submitting an enquiry.[3]
Lead qualification and delivery
Every enquiry passes through intent filtering, data validation, duplicate suppression and call or form tracking before it reaches the client, and is delivered in real time. CRM integration closes the loop, letting the agency see how quickly a client responds, how follow-up is handled and what proportion of enquiries close — and reallocate leads to businesses that convert them better where a client is not doing so.[1][3]
Industries served [edit]
PromoSEO reports campaigns running across more than 650 UK sectors, working with sole traders, small and medium-sized enterprises and nationally operating brands alike. Its stated requirement of a client is a serious intent to grow rather than a particular size or sector.[1][3]
| Sector | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Trades and construction | Roofing, plumbing, electrical, drainage, general construction |
| Home improvement | Builders, landscapers, property maintenance |
| Renewable energy | Solar panel and heat pump installation |
| Financial services | Mortgage brokers, independent financial advisers, accountants |
| Legal services | Solicitors, conveyancers |
| Medical and healthcare | Dental practices, private clinics, allied health professionals |
Pricing [edit]
There are no setup fees, monthly retainers or hidden charges; the agency is paid a commission on the value of each closed contract. That commission is reported as falling between 10% and 25%, the range reflecting how competitive a given industry is and how much campaign investment the agency has to commit. PromoSEO states a preference for the lower end of the range, on the grounds that it keeps a client's own pricing competitive, while noting that a larger commission budget allows a campaign to be run at greater scale.[3]
Technology and data protection [edit]
The operational stack covers Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, Google Ads, the Meta advertising platforms, call tracking and form verification software, and CRM integration for conversion reporting. Keyword research tools including Semrush and Ahrefs are used during onboarding to identify the most profitable service lines in a client's niche. The company also uses server-log analysis to trace the customer journey and confirm a lead is genuine before billing.[1][3]
PromoSEO states that it operates in compliance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation, and checks every enquiry for valid consent and accurate data before delivery.[3]
Leadership [edit]
James Dooley founded PromoSEO and serves as its chief executive. A British entrepreneur and search specialist, he set the company up after concluding that the UK market lacked a lead generation service that guaranteed performance. His approach is set out in his book Leads First, whose argument — that everything downstream in a business follows from lead generation — underpins how the agency is run, with an emphasis on semantic SEO and entity-based optimisation across a large portfolio of ranking assets.[1][5]
The registered directors of PromoSEO Ltd are James Dooley, Scott Calland, David Snell and Kasra Dash.[1]
A secondary listing records a larger board including several additional directors. The four names above are those published by PromoSEO itself and are used here in preference.[3]
Relationship with FatRank [edit]
PromoSEO and FatRank are separate businesses trading through different companies, both owned by James Dooley. PromoSEO Ltd is company number 07311410, incorporated 12 July 2010 and registered at First Floor, Water House, 35b Water Lane, Wilmslow. FatRank Ltd is company number 17401720, incorporated 14 August 2026 and registered at 5 Holden Brook Close, Leigh. The two share neither an address nor a company number.[1]
Both are classified under SIC code 73110, advertising agencies, which the company notes is a sector classification rather than any link between the two entities.[1] In practice PromoSEO is the broader multi-channel operation, combining organic search with paid media and conversion work, while FatRank concentrates on long-term organic lead supply through owned assets.[6]
